I FIRST HEARD THE CRANES WHILE AT A FRIEND'S HOUSE--I RANDOMLY CHOSE ONE OF HIS CDS AND I WAS LIKE AN ETHEREAL JOLT OF ELF-MAGIC. ALISON'S VOICE IS LIKE SOMETHING PREGNANT AND OTHERWORLDY, FORGOTTEN AND ABUSED AND SCREAMING IN THE UNCONSCIOUS LIKE A BANSHEE. HEY ALISON--I HAVE A BOOK TO RECCOMEND TO YOU IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF IT ALREADY--THE WHITE GODDESS BY ROBERT GRAVES. FOR ME YOUR VOICE EXPRESSES AN ARCHETYPE.

Melissa - I don't think Ģ12 is unreasonable for the lyric book and anyway lots of the lyrics are reproduced with Cranes permission on the Starblood website. No I don't think Cranes members read this guestbook, Jim isn't even on the net. And as for Cranes "bleeding fans for every goddam penny" oh please! If you want to leave a message for them, Paul posts on the www board on this site.

Daniel - Cranes are still recording bits for the new album I think and are looking for a March/April release.
I think the original October date was somewhat optimistic and the lack of info from Cranes was unfortunate on their part.

I`m not shure if any one from the cranes actually reads this.Oh well here it goes any ways. I've been listining to you from the begining of your band.i bought all your tapes then replaced them with cds plus i`ve bought some vynal when i could get my hands on it.I`ve payed to see you 4 times. What i don`t get is why i`ve been searching the web for hours trying to get lyrics.I`ve enjoyed years of trying to figure out what the hell you singing.I don`t have a goddamed credit card nor do i actually have the money to send you screwdges just so i can finally find out what your singing exactlly .and i just think that it suxz that you have to bleed your fans for every goddamed penny that you can.

saw a video one night in 92 for tomorrow's tears...then, weeks later, this starnge band opens for The Cure on the Wish tour, and i recognize the song, cos' i really liked it from when i saw the video...fell madly in love with the sound, and subsequently, with them..."forever" will always be a staple on my soul, it came to me at a very intense and important time of my life, very raw, very true. i'm very much looking forward to a release of their new album...my friends call me "starblood", it's been my nicknmae since college. isn't that cool? i met cranes when they were promoting forever, in NYC, one night before they played live. they were really nice, and i got a picture with them.

I love the music thank you so much for making it for us. I first caught a free concert in 1994 at UNLV in Las Vegas. It was a very small show and was the best I have seen there. I was turned on to the band by a friend that I had to call when I found the cd in my collection after acouple of years without listening to it. Thank you for the memories it brings back a lot of good ones for me, just to hear your music....
Thanks again Chad.

Great music!!! the first time when I listen Cranes was in a Incredible radio program call "La gaceta Lunar" from Caracas about Van Gogh in 1991 with the song "leaving and breathing" which it was one of the better things that I listen since today. Now I got the five first albums, and I enjoy them very much. Well I prefer the most darks albums...
I'm a very addictive to the better music from this planet, especially Goth music and underground music
Please write me. Any comments will be welcome.

I heard "Beach Mover" when I came home from school after an exam - GCSE Design&Communication, I think - and I stopped dead in the centre of my bedroom, my exam forgotten, my schoolbag hanging unnoticed off my right arm, my mouth open, my eyes far away, afraid but bewitched..... for three minutes I was definitely somewhere else. But almost ALL their material is like that.... how can they produce such works of genius over and over and over???? EMAIL ME AND LET`S TALK CRANES!

I feel so bad for letting you guys down... for me you are practically a local band as I live just across the water from Portsmouth, and although I vist the Wedgewood Rooms VERY often (like, it's almost a second home) I've never been free on the nights that you have played there. SORRY! But as you probably play there more than at any other place, I am hoping to make amends in the near future! How did I get into the Cranes? I really don't know... it was years ago, maybe some tiny column in the NME slagging you off (always a sign of a good band that!), but the important thing is that your music fills my heart with wonder... it's so beautiful, romantic, tragic, and haunting all at the same time. I really hope that you go back to a more orchestral sound, like the Wings Of Joy LP, and feel free to sing in French any time you wish Alison!...Mmmmm! Beautiful Sadness indeed.

hello!
Just popping by to add my first ever message to this despite reading it all the time:)
So first Cranes gig was supporting Young Gods April 1990 in Glasgow at Strathclyde Uni Union and many times since including nearly all the Cure shows in 92. Would've stayed for the Cure but they couldn't have bettered Cranes :) Opinions on the new album? Yes please, soon. Cranes have been me fav band since 1990, been to so many shows but too shy to say hello at them or here. I wear my T shirts with pride every where I go and now I'll depart again. If you ever see me at a show (I'm the square boring looking one) say 'hello'

The first time I heard the Cranes was when I heard 'Tommorow's Tears' on a record store speaker. The Satie-like piano chords and Alison's delicate, childlike vocals mesmerized me. "Wings of Joy" was a godsend, and helped me through a depressing New England winter. I managed to see them live during the 'Loved' tour. I stayed behind and talked with Alison and her brother; both were really sweet. I am looking forward to the new CD.

I've never seen you live before, so i would really, really, REALLY
appreciate you playing live here in Scotland before I finish my studies

I know this is't the right place to ask this question, but do any of you out
there know of any person who could sell me the "La Tragedie" cd?

Oh, and I would appreciate any e-mail. If you don't want to talk about Cranes
we could always talk about something else. Like Dead Can Dance, The Cure or

If I may, I'll just say I was very happy to read of Foetus' upcoming tour plans in this guestbook, as he is one of the truly talented musicians of the millenium, and I hope he does get our beloved little cranes to open for him. I'd pay good money to see a clint/ali duet on a tender little tune like The Only Good Christian is A Dead Christian...

I first saw the Cranes open for the Cure in 1992...its hard for me to believe that it has been that long. Both bands made such an impression on me that evening that I decided to return the following night,as they had two shows scheduled. After that I was hooked,I rushed out to buy anything I could by the Cranes and have loved them ever since.
In 1997 my life changed drastically when I found myself touring with them very briefly when they needed help.Since then I have been constantly working in the music business and have recently started doing session work as a drummer. To the Cranes...Allison,Jim,Marc and Paul I give much thanks and appreciate them and their music very much.Cheers!

FOETUS will be performing live for the first time in over
three years in a prestigious headlining concert at London's
Royal Festival Hall.

The London show will be prefaced by three dates in the United
States; JG Thirlwell has christened this live action the "Clams
on Brillo 2000" tour.

This incarnation of FOETUS sees el maestro de disastre JG
Thirlwell employing the manifold talents of Brian Emrich
(recently of Congo Norvell and Family of God, last spied as
sound designer on Darren ("Pi") Arenofsky's last two films)
on bass; Vinnie Signorelli (Unsane, Swans) on drums; Christian
Gibbs (C.Gibbs Revue, Morning Glories) on guitars and Jim
Coleman (erstwhile Cop Shoot Cop samplist, also known for his
work as Phylr and Here) on keys and samplers.

The set will consist of material from the forthcoming FOETUS
album "Flow", some brand new purpose-built material, as well
as some classics and nuggets from FOETUS history radically
reworked, including songs never before played live by any
incarnation of the FOETUS band..........gasp!

Live dates, as of now, are as follows:
Sep 12 Baltimore @ Ottobar
Sep 14 Philadelphia @ Upstage
Sep 15 NYC @ Knitting Factory
Sep 19 London @ Royal Festival Hall

No support acts on the US Dates; however negotiations are under
way in London to secure two exciting and quite notorious support
acts. For further details and updates, keep a feverish eye
peeled at the News and Info section of http://www.foetus.org.

I got introduced to Cranes by a Czech English student of mine, who loved music and knew many of the bands we donīt hear enough about. He lent me a tape with Loved and Forever and over the weekend I got hooked. Already a fan of great music like Curve and Lush, Cranes grabbed my attention as one of the most original bands I had heard. What I hate is the severe lack of availability of their albums. Madrid is not a bad city for alternative music but even here you cannot find more than Loved and Population 4. I even wrote to Dedicated, their record company, asking why and asking where I can find the Tragedy of Orestes and Electra album - they didnīt even respond. Do the Cranes not know that their fans would love to buy this CD?? I guess THEY do but their record distribution is strangled by the music companies.... Anyway, a new album later this year sounds great - letīs hope they get it out by October as they say!! Probably the most original group on the planet!!

I can only say that I LOVE THEM! I am so "up in the sky" when I listen their music!... My favorite song is Jewel, and I am listening it tousands of times a day (I am not exagerating!) and also in the night, when I go to bed hearing their music! Thank you Cranes for your music, you really made me happy!

If anyone has lyrics, please send them to me. Thanks a lot!

way back when the cure were touring the wish tour i got tickets to see them in worcester ma (usa)..the problem was we went to the 1st show and missed the cranes by a night but were wondering who they were..i bought wings of joy and loved it, my girl freind at the time "borrowed" it and never gave it back! so a little while later i bought loved and have been a die hard fan ever since...all i can say is that the band are musical genus. the off timing combined rythems and a little tiny voice that haunts as well as soothes, their sound is just simply pure.and i love it.i hope they continue for many years to come and produce records that will keep pushing and evolving their sound and their musical style.i play bass and have been influenced by meny styles, however the sound and style of the cranes have by far influenced me the most.and i hope one day i will be able to catch them live at least a few times!thanx for the music and memories-uzzy

Does anyone know how to get a copy of the promotional album calles Lilies? More specifically a track entitled Casablanca. We got a copy of it at a radio station I used to work for, but have not seen or heard of it anywhere else. Any clues?

OK then, lets just say this once more. The Goth tag which has plagued Cranes throughout their career was foisted upon them by lazy music journalists who have to pigeonhole music in order to discuss it.
The terms and qualities you attribute to Goth can just as easily be used in terms of other musical genres
depending on your own interpretation.
How the Cranes music is labelled should be of no importance whatsoever. It's either good music or it isn't. I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint you, but Cranes have hated the Gothic tag ever since it was first used.
They don't belong in some stagnant Gothic ghetto, they deserve so much better.

I first heard the Cranes when a friend lent me his copy of Wings of joy, which i loved and bought Forever. I first saw them live on the Cure's Wish tour, when they were fantastic.
I then made a trip to London to see the Cranes at the Astoria II and stupidly failed to find the girl I'd met the week before in Bristol until the end !
When they finished I was lucky enough to be at the left of the stage and as I peered at the group coming off the stage Alison waved at me ! :O)
Since then my support has somewhat waned.. I have been without Hi-Fi for about 4 months (ruddy burglers) but soon whipped the album on and remembered why I loved the group...
so I'm going to Bristol next weekend for the gig
See some of you there !

Hi Everybody! I adore Cranes, "Forever"is my favourite album, and the new song "Here comes the day"is amazing! But I can't understand why the Cranes are getting so annoyed when they're labelled as "Gothic". I think that Cranes music, as well as And Also the Trees, The Cure, Siouxsie & THe Banshees, In the Nursery, All About Eve and so on, well rapresent the essence of "true"Gothic: introspection, dreams, romanticism, poetry, deep feelings, passions...Nothing to do with death, nightmares, witches, blood, skulls, horrors and all the other crap that common people usually relate to Gothic when they think about it.
I can't believe that Mark and Manu <> in Leipzig (I read this in the review)and they weren't happy to take part to a Gothic festival!!! How can they say such things??? They should remember dearly the thousands of Goths acclaiming Cranes and considering them as "The new Cure" during the Wish tour and the Forever tour!!! If so many goths love Cranes music,it means there's a reason why: it's dark, introspective, romantic, dreamy and godlike. I also think that some of their videos, expecially "Inescapable","Adoration"and"Jewel" have a very gothic atmosphere.
Goodbye to all!

I first heard of Cranes when Wings Of Joy came out...a reviewer said it would make Edgar Allen Poe scream with delight, or words to that effect. I bought the album before hearing a note. Favorites: Joy Lies Within, Adoration, Clear, Lilies, Can't Get Free. Is there a new album? I haven't been paying attention. I hope they bring the piano back into the forefront...it added to their unique sound. A beautiful sadness indeed.

hmmm...how i got into Cranes...
well, one day upon looking for a certain Siouxsie and the Banshees cd, i came across a Cranes cd, obviously in the wrong section. it was the full length cd "Wings of Joy"...needless to say, i fell in love with each and every song on the album, especially "watersong". since then i've widened my collection of Cranes albums...Allison Shaw has such a pretty voice, and the Cranes are very pleasant to listen to...i'd love to see the Cranes play in Chicago or Cleveland...Cranes make utterly wonderful musik :)
